
HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 5

Requesting the West Virginia Division of Highways to name the new
bridge at Martha, West Virginia, "The Daniel Memorial Bridge."
Whereas, John and Pearl Daniel of Martha, Cabell County, West
Virginia, raised eight sons on the farm in Martha, seven of which
served in the United States Navy both during and after World War
II; and
Whereas, The Daniel family is among those with the largest
number of siblings to serve in the United States Navy at once; and
Whereas, Pearl Daniel was given a letter of appreciation by
Secretary of Navy J. William Middendorf in nineteen seventy-six for
the loyal, honorable and selfless service of her seven sons for a
combined time of over one hundred twenty-five years; and
Whereas, Charles, Elmer and Georgie Daniel all served on the
USS Blue together, and where Georgie and Reece Daniel served on the
USS Cayama together before the Sullivan brothers tragedy split them
apart; and
Whereas, The Daniel family has shown a continued devotion to the farm in Martha, and an unmatched patriotic legacy to their
country, and thus, the Daniel family should be recognized and
honored by naming the new bridge in Martha, West Virginia, "The
Daniel Memorial Bridge"; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Legislature hereby requests the West Virginia
Division of Highways to name the new bridge in Martha, Cabell
County, West Virginia, "The Daniel Memorial Bridge"; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the West Virginia Division of Highways
provide and erect a sign at either end of the bridge displaying the
name of the bridge; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates is
hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the
Commissioner of the Division of Highways and Dorsey W. Daniel, Jr.
